Lassa fever kills four in Kogi, nine cases recorded

Kogi State Ministry of Health has confirmed nine cases of Lassa fever with four deaths since the outbreak of the disease in the state about a month ago.

According to Ojotule, Kogi State statistics on Lassa fever outbreak update as of February 8 showed a total of 31 suspected cases.

He said that out of the 31 suspected cases of Lassa fever, one was probable, 17 negative, nine confirmed, while five were awaiting laboratory results.

He added that four deaths had been recorded among the nine confirmed cases with Case Fatality Rate of 44.4 percent; the percentage of deaths from the confirmed cases.

He said the nine confirmed cases were from five local government areas of Ibaji (with two), Okene (two), Idah (three), Okehi (one), and Igalamela LGA (one).

The epidemiologist said contact tracing and follow-up were ongoing, adding that a total of 177 contacts had been listed.

Panic in Gusau as dead woman tests positive

There was fear of Lassa fever outbreak in Gusau town, the Zamfara State capital, following the death of a woman, who tested positive.

The woman, who was brought to King Fahad Women and Children Hospital, Samaru Gusau died on Sunday and an investigation conducted by doctors showed she died of Lassa fever.
A senior health official who did not want his name in print told one of our reporters the woman was brought to the hospital with the symptoms of Lassa fever.

He stated that following the test conducted on her, it was discovered she died of Lassa fever.

As of the time of filing this report, the doctors were testing other women in the same room as the dead woman.

The hospital also prevented people from gaining entry to prevent the spread of the killer disease.

Efforts to speak with government officials on the issue proved abortive as nobody was ready to talk.
